If you are looking for ideas for your winter vacation, why not go to exotic locations that offer getaways that make the most of the winter season?
Here are five getaways that give the experience of winter, and are sure to make your vacation special:
1. IceHotel, Sweden
Located in the village of Jukkasjärvi in Sweden, the IceHotel is made anew each November.
A team of architects, designers and artists put up steel frames and then spray them with snow, wait for a few days, then remove those frames and what is left standing is the hotel.
Everything is made of snow and ice. The walls, the lobby bar, the beds, even the chandeliers.
The hotel bedrooms are below freezing, and the bed is a slab of ice. But you are given sleeping bags and mittens so you stay warm while you sleep.
Some of the rooms have different themes. This year the theme for the Ceremony Hall is “Gingko”, in celebration of the Gingko tree, symbolizing hope, strength and longevity.
There’s even an ice chapel for couples who want a unique wedding!
2. Harbin Ice Festival, China
Held in Harbin, Heilongjiang in January, this is a monthlong international festival and competition, and is the biggest ice and snow festival in the world.
You’ll see huge ice and snow sculptures, like a Buddha statue of more than 4,500 square cubic meters of snow, and huge ice buildings that are lit up in different colours.
There is a 3D light show and Northern Lights-themed ice slides.
3. Blue Lagoon, Iceland
The Blue Lagoon is one of Iceland’s most visited attractions, and is within 30 minutes the capital of Iceland, Reykjavik.
The milky-blue waters of this massive 10,000 square foot outdoor geothermal seawater bath are perfect for winter. They heat up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit, with steam escaping off them, for comfortable bathing.
The lagoon is surrounded by a barren landscape of black lava rocks and volcanoes.
These waters are known for their healing properties that are especially beneficial for skin ailments.
4. Paws Up, U.S.A.
Located in Greenough, Montana, Paws Up is a luxury ranch resort.
Horse related activities include sleigh rides, horseback riding and skijoring, which is skiing while being pulled by a horse.
There is also dogsledding, snow tubing, snowmobiling or you can travel under your own power by snowshoeing.
They offer up Winterfest, which is a culinary event that features some prominent chefs who offer up winter-themed feasts.
5. Angler’s Haven Ice Fishing Adventure, Canada
This getaway in Nippissing, Ontario is for two nights in an Executive Ice Bungalow.
Angler’s Haven sets you up with transportation to and from the bungalow, and everything you’ll need to fish in comfort. There is a gas fireplace, a gas BBQ, a propane stove and dishes. There is even daily waste removal.
They provide everything you’ll need for fishing. Drilled holes, hooks, lines, sinkers and tip up devices. They even supply a dozen minnows per person.
Enjoy your winter holidays and enjoy what the season offers in adventure!
